Nosy Be, Madagascar
There is no set itinerary here. Some couples fill every day; others barely leave the beach. Both are a good holiday.
If you want to be out: sail to sandbars that appear and disappear with the tide, snorkel reefs that sit shallow and close in, meet lemurs on Nosy Komba, or walk the vanilla and ylang-ylang plantations inland. Quad bikes and horse riding cover the forest tracks and coastal trails, and a hike up Mont Passot gets you the island’s best sunset over its crater lakes.
If you want to be still: the beachfront lounges have hammocks under the palms, the water is warm year-round, and nobody is going to hurry you. Mornings are the best of it — the sky goes pink and gold, and a walk along the sand at dawn is worth setting an alarm for.
Beach bars glow with lanterns, live Malagasy music carries down the sand, and night markets fill with food and craft stalls. Cultural shows bring out drumming, dancing and storytelling; quieter nights are bonfires, two chairs and the stars.
Dinner is the highlight for most couples. Grilled fish, prawns, calamari and crab, lifted with coconut, lime and local herbs; lychee, mango and passion fruit; vanilla and ylang-ylang on the air. A small French and Italian expat community has left Nosy Be with cafes and restaurants far better than its remoteness suggests.
A short getaway fills quickly. These four fit neatly between beach days.
Beach at the door, and the island’s restaurants and nightlife whenever you want them.
Ask About Lodges →Your own space and nobody else’s timetable.
Ask About Villas →Wake up somewhere different each morning, off islands most visitors never reach.
Ask About Charters →Tours run from 1 April to mid-January. It is also the best time for snorkelling and diving, when visibility is at its clearest.
We don’t run trips between 15 January and 31 March. That is cyclone season, seas are rough and excursions get cancelled — not the holiday anyone books.
If timing matters for what you want to see: humpback whales pass in August and September, whale sharks in October and November, and turtles are on the reefs most of the year. Full detail is on our Nosy Be travel tips page, including every flight route in.
