After Dark

Your Evenings, Once The Sun Goes Down

Nosy Be changes character at dusk. Beach bars glow with lanterns, live Malagasy music drifts along the sand, and the evening is yours to make as lively or as quiet as you want it.

Some couples want the island out in full voice — drumming, dancing, night markets full of food and craft stalls, and a cocktail somewhere with your feet still in the sand. Others want a bonfire, two chairs and the Indian Ocean. Both are easy here, and you can swap between them night to night.

The food is a large part of it. Fresh seafood dominates — grilled fish, prawns, calamari and crab, lifted with coconut, lime and local herbs. Tropical fruit like lychee, mango and passion fruit turns up at breakfast, vanilla and ylang-ylang scent the air, and a small French and Italian expat community means the island’s cafes and restaurants are far better than a place this remote has any right to be.

A Typical Evening

  • Sundowners as the light goes
  • Grilled seafood on the beach
  • Live Malagasy music and drumming
  • Night markets for food and crafts
  • Bonfires on the sand
  • Or simply the stars, and no one else
